10 reasons why you don't have a dōTERRA account yet (myth-busting)
Do you believe any of these dōTERRA myths?
I used to believe a bunch of these, too.
There's a lot of misinformation about essential oils out there, and so I want to dispel some of these dōTERRA myths for anyone who’s still on the fence about which essential oils they should purchase.
It's not always fun to find out when you've been mistaken (I was mistaken about oils for a long time). Personally, I'm glad to discover new truths, and I expect that you do, also.
First - you’ll notice that you can't just go to any old store and buy a bottle of dōTERRA essential oil.
You might see retailers selling essential oils on say, Amazon or eBay that they claim are dōTERRA brand - but I wouldn't recommend that at all.
It's incredibly easy to tamper with the contents of those bottles, and make it look like they're factory-sealed. Besides, when you make an account with dōTERRA and order directly, you're not only getting their purity guarantee, but a 25% wholesale discount, too!
Yea, I know you're thinking, "Ok, but what's the catch?"
That's why it's time for some myth-busting about what you're getting into when you open a doTERRA account!
Here’s my top ten myths about dōTERRA:
1. You think you'll have to order every month.
doTERRA does have a loyalty program, but it’s 100% optional. Just opening an account lets you order wholesale (25% off) for a whole year - and if you buy an enrollment kit, your membership fee is waived.
If you notice that you’re ordering more than 1-2 times a year, the Loyalty Rewards Program (LRP) is a good deal - because it lets you earn from 10-30% MORE off the wholesale price, for a total of 55% off retail pricing after one year.
2. You think they're just air fresheners, or you prefer scented candles.
Oh gawd, please let me save you from the chemical shit-storm that is scented candles.
Even unscented candles, you’re breathing in burnt-up vapors full of carcinogens. How could this be a good idea??
Get yourself an ionic, cool-mist diffuser and start improving your indoor air quality, instead of just covering up the bad smells with fake-nice ones.
This is doubly important if you live in the city, can’t open your windows frequently, don’t have houseplants, and/or have furry pets.
Indoor air quality is typically 10 times worse than outdoor - and yes, it makes a difference in your breathing patterns and your overall health.
3. You don't know how to use oils and you're afraid they'll be a waste of money.
I understand this worry - it’s an investment and you’d rather not just add things to your home that will collect dust in a cabinet somewhere.
It really helps when you have a community of friends who are already into the essential-oil lifestyle and will help you learn to think differently about problem-solving in your daily life.
We have that in our private online community. Before you know it, you’ll be reaching for these little brown bottles for all sorts of daily household and personal care needs - and saving money! Why? Because you’ll learn so many new and easy ways to DIY, that you won’t need to buy as many non-food products at the grocery store.
4. You don't want to be part of a pyramid scheme or be forced into selling oils.
So, pyramid schemes are illegal..
Instead of having a massive ads budget like so many companies do, dōTERRA takes the money that others pour into ads, and uses it to pay their distributors an income.
Now, how many of us have bought something once and then never ordered from that company again? Pretty common, right? But it’s certain death to be a one-hit wonder in business.
Selling products that customers like and keep buying is called "retention". A typical retention rate is less than 15% in network marketing, meaning - only about 15% of buyers ever placed a 2nd order after the first.
dōTERRA's retention rate is one of the highest in network marketing, at over 65%!
The difference is this: doTERRA started with a passion for selling something real, pure, and impactful in the world, and then decided to use network marketing instead of ads to make sales.
Other companies start out by recognizing how well network marketing works, short-term - but don’t have much of consequence to sell. Big difference.
5. You think oils cost too much, and you can't afford them.
There’s a saying in the world of holistic wellness, that goes, you can either invest in your health now (with good food and preventative measures), or be forced to pay for it later (via the medical monstrosity; err, I mean, industry).
Oils are an investment in our well-being, and for me, that's something I want to prioritize.
They are not cheap - but then, I'd never trust a 12$ bottle of Frankincense.
Somebody is taking a hit for those "cheap" prices, whether it’s the human beings who are harvesting and growing, or the environment, or YOU, by using sub-par quality oils and not getting the results you’re seeking. (Did you notice the part above where you can get up to 55% off retail with the Loyalty Program?)
6. doTERRA isn't Certified Organic.
You got me - this one is actually true - dōTERRA is not Certified Organic...and personally, I do not see that as a drawback!
WHY? Because organic certification is cumbersome, not always trustworthy, and wildly expensive for businesses to maintain. Those costs get passed on to you, the consumer, as well.
Wait, what do you mean, not always trustworthy?
Okay - so, did you know that organic products can legally be labelled ‘organic’ even when they have been diluted or mixed with non-organic substances?? If something is licensed for topical use only, the percentage of organics can be quite low - and that doens’t even mention the added potential for contamination or adulteration.
7. You think there's no proven science about essential oil's health benefits.
It's interesting, because scientists in the past had not been able to produce many reliable studies using essential oils…
WHY? Because the quality and purity of the samples were so unreliable.
This was the case until about ten years ago, when dōTERRA started working directly with researchers to provide quality-controlled samples for testing.
Since dōTERRA submits its oils to independent labs that look at hundreds of chemical markers (instead of just one or two) to determine if an oil is pure, doTERRA’s oils are currently the only ones that researchers can rely upon to create viable scientific studies with reproduce-able, replicate-able results.
Check out the dōTERRA Science blog and the independent Aromatic Plant Research Center for more.
8. You think essential oils are dangerous to use if you're not a licensed aromatherapist.
Essential oil use and study has come a long way since the 1800s - and there’s multiple schools of thought on this topic, French versus English being the two major ones.
The French tradition of essential oils focused on aromatic use only, so most modern aromatherapists will insist that essential oils should only be used aromatically - but this is based on very old science.
Remember how I just mentioned that essential oil purity, quality, and standards of uniformity have seen massive leaps and bounds, in the last ten years alone?
I think it’s time to expand our stance on essential oils as potent healing tools with measureable chemistry, instead of simply aromatic botanicals - and many doctors agree with me!
9. You think essential oils are destructive to the Earth and exploit indigenous farmers.
With most oils companies, this is unfortunately too true. I’ve been flamed on social media for using essential oils - because I’m also part of the sustainable and regenerative agriculture movement.
A few folks I know exclusively use herbs, because of the awful environmental reputation that a lot of essential oil companies have created - but this is where the dōTERRA difference really shines.
dōTERRA is truly going above and beyond to create sustainable, closed-loop systems that benefit not only the land on which the plants are farmed on, but the people and communities who are involved in the harvest and production.
Just look at what they're doing to maintain Frankincense forests.
10. You already use essential oils, and don't get why there’s so much hype over doTERRA.
Hey, I was exactly the same way! I remember first seeing doTERRA oils in 2011, at the first-ever Birth Without Fear convention.
I had already been using store-bought essential oils in my homemade cleaning recipes for years, and I didn't understand why so many people were crazy about these oils.
Just a bit later, my 4 year old son was faced with a health situation that my herbs, homeopathy, and grocery store oils couldn't touch - and a friend invited me to try dōTERRA.
I was so skeptical I almost didn’t accept their gift - but then, within 12 hours we saw massive improvement - and my child was able to avoid dental sedation and surgery.
FINALLY I understood that these oils were like night and day from the scented bottles I had before. dōTERRA oils are truly in a class by themselves - and grocery-store smelly-goods just can’t compare.
…but don't take my word for it...order your own oils today and find out why they're different!
