So, in modern birth, it’s clear that there’s too much focus on what could go wrong - and holistic birthkeepers understand that trusting the birth process generally gives better results than surrendering to a state of fear, doubt and worry.
Through birth affirmations and the Law of Attraction, the mind-body connection is finally gaining ground and credence in the birth world.
It’s seductively easy to pretend that the power of positive thinking is a panacea for all ills (or else, pointless), when really, both are missing the point.
I’ve met moms who have been almost offended when I say that birth happens largely in the mind.
They snip back things such as,
“So I could have just thought away my C-section?”
Sigh.
I’m not saying a difficult birth experience is a woman’s own fault for thinking thoughts that “weren’t good enough”.
That’s victim-blaming, and also just rude.
As if women don’t already blame themselves for everything, now even our own thoughts are betraying us? Pffft.
[ordering at the drive-thru] “Hi, can I have some birth affirmations, but without the toxic positivity plz?”
Birth is wild, unpredictable, and so much of the mystery and medicine is found in surrendering to the process - not in controlling it, trying to control it, or pretending you’re in surrender, when actually your fears are controlling you…
Positive thinking and the law of attraction is not some woo-woo ‘guarantee’ that you should be able to control every aspect of your life, or birth.
They’re meant to equip you emotionally, to help you become more resilient when things don’t go as expected.
Here’s how it actually works: Think of the law of attraction like a magnet for emotions.
Stuff that you really want, AND stuff that you really don’t want … both of these states have an emotional field around them, which acts like a magnet and draws you into alignment with those experiences.
Not everything is guaranteed to stick.
It’s not about “wishing really hard” and then either experiencing success or failure in getting what you wished for. 😏

The law of attraction makes the most sense to me as a lifestyle - where we are always cultivating awareness of our default state of being, because we understand that no matter what, we are constantly aligning with what we already believe and feel about ourselves, about life in general - and of course, about how our journey of birth will unfold…
Affirmations can be helpful because words have power - meaning, what we speak, we create (this is the ancient translation of abracadabra, by the way).
Vocalizing and hearing our thoughts and hopes articulated into words has an organizing effect on the cells in our body, specifically in our heart and brain, which are quite literally transmitters and receivers of frequency.
Our entire body is always broadcasting a signal across the universe, always harmonizing with and receiving similar frequencies to our own.
Thoughts are frequency, and words are a more dense version of frequency, because they are uniform and can be similarly understood by many humans even across the planet from each other.
It’s like a larger layer of quantum entanglement. :)
Notice I said “similarly understood” - because two people could read or hear the same sentence and still get a different FEEL from it. This is why it’s important to choose your affirmation words carefully - interpretation and feeling is everything! A “natural birth” could include all sorts of unwanted elements … even if it’s objectively what we want!

The Universe runs on feeling and frequency - and it’s as personal as we decide to make it.
The world is not how it is, it’s how WE are, because we are already creating it, perceiving it, and creating it again with our individual perceptions. The law of attraction is not really some far-out concept, because it’s already at play and we’ve been participating in it since we were born.
Our subjective interpretation of reality is so powerful that two people can experience the same event yet have very different memories of it.
Positive thinking and mind-body techniques are less about controlling future outcomes, and more about acceptance of any future outcomes that may unfold.
Don’t try to pin down the particles, embrace the wave.
If you want a 10-minute video with my favorite birth affirmations, I’ve got that for you right here 😘
Affirmations may turn out to be an ideal, meditative tool for you - or not - but either way, don’t turn them into toxic positivity!
